Dear Friends of Possibilities Africa,
Recently I had the opportunity to travel to East Africa with my wife Jill to see first hand the ministry of Possibilities Africa (PA). Before accepting the position with PA as Managing Director USA, I had researched the ministry and knew several people who spoke VERY highly of Martin Simiyu (Founder & Executive Director) and the work of PA. After visiting Rwanda and Kenya, I can say that the ministry exceeded our expectations.
In the late 80’s I had the opportunity to live in rural Kenya for a summer showing the Jesus film to rural villages and schools. That summer we saw God work and many people accepted Christ as their Savior. But what God impressed on me then was the huge need to train rural pastors of Africa. These men and women had a calling from God but had little to no theological training. This recent trip clarified my opportunity to become part of the solution to what I had seen as a problem long ago.
Jill and I flew into Kigali, Rwanda on August 5, 2019. The first two days we took part in a training seminar for 30 pastors and leaders. I was impressed with the competency of the trainers and the material being taught. After the conference we traveled the beautiful, winding roads of Rwanda visiting the western part of the country around Lake Kivu. Jill and I loved meeting the pastors and seeing up close the small businesses that have been started through the leadership of PA.
After our time in Rwanda we flew to Kisumu, Kenya on the shore of Lake Victoria. We met with several groups of pastors over a few days. We were inspired to see the depth and maturity of relationships within these groups and to see these groups being multiplied into neighboring communities.
Time after time pastors shared that before their exposure to PA, they didn’t think they could generate an income outside of ministry, therefore, they were basically poor beggars. This often led to bitterness towards their congregation who were unable to fund the pastor’s basic needs. PA trains pastors to use resources and skills they have to produce an income. This has enabled them to provide for their families while at the same time pastor their congregation. But starting small businesses is not just for pastors. Since 2012, over 5,000 businesses have been started through the encouragement and training of PA. This would not be possible without your prayers and financial gifts.
Thank you for the vital role you play which enables Possibilities Africa to provide solutions in East Africa.
Managing Director, Possibilities Africa USA
